
Oratorical Contest
The American Legion Constitutional Speech Program
The American Legion Oratorical Contest is a long-standing youth program that encourages high school students to develop a deeper understanding of the United States Constitution while building confidence in public speaking and leadership.
Sponsored locally by American Legion Post 171, the program challenges students to prepare and deliver an original oration on a constitutional topic, followed by an assigned-topic presentation that tests their knowledge and composure.
Who Can Participate
Open to high school students in grades 9-12.
Participants prepare and deliver an original speech on the U.S. Constitution.

How It Works
Students begin competition at the local Post level, with winners advancing through:
- Post Level
- District Competition
- Department of Maryland Competition
- National Finals
At the national level, the American Legion awards significant scholarship prizes to top competitors.
