Chartered in 1946, American Legion Post 171 was established by veterans returning home from World War II who sought continued service, fellowship, and a way to support one another and their community. Since that time, the Post has welcomed veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces and continues to serve the Damascus community through fellowship, service, and support for veterans and their families.

Early Roots in Damascus

The story of Post 171 is closely tied to the history of Damascus, Maryland, a community with roots dating back to the early 19th century. As the town grew from a small rural settlement into a thriving community, it became home to generations of veterans who would later shape the Post’s identity.

  • Founding: Established in the fall of 1945 by World War II veterans

Continuing the Tradition
